Marriage, Civil Union or Domestic Partnership – What’s in a Name?

I came across this article (or column), “The California Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Marriage for Same-Sex Couples: Why Domestic Partnerships Are Not Enough.” at FindLaw.com discussing the recent California Supreme Court ruling concerning same-sex marriages.

In this part-one of a two-part series, the authors, Joanna Grossman & Linda McClain, look at the complexities of what to call a “same-sex marriage”. Should it indeed be called a “marriage“, a “civil union” or perhaps, a “domestic partnership“?

The authors go into considerable depth discussing the the reasoning behind the court ruling, in particular, highlighting its restoration of constitutional rights for same-sex couples who wish to “marry”.

Feel free to comment as I’m sure there will be a wide range of views on this topic.
