Free Marriage Records Public

by Jed Elaine

Of all the record categories, Marriage Records must be the most widely searched. It is also one of the core Public Vital Records. Like all public records, they can be obtained free of charge from the respective government departments of offices in charge of the service. There may be some exceptions, but broadly speaking, anyone has the right to access and view anybody’s marriage records as long as it’s done through the proper channels.

Their treatment may vary from state to state but Free Marriage Records are available in all states. Coming under state jurisdiction, they are maintained at state repositories. It is important to note that state records are not linked among themselves. If someone has resided in various states, all those states have to be covered in order for a marriage record search to be complete. If the person has never married in a state, the search will return with a ‘no record found’. This is often the desired outcome of a search.

When protected information or those deemed as too sensitive or against public interests are lodged in the marriage records, they will be classified as Confidential Marriage Records. They are still Free Marriage Records technically but will be a lot more restrictive in accessibility and use. The bulk of free marriage records fall into the category of Public Marriage Records. The information that is found in them includes the personal particulars of the couple, their parents and witnesses. The name of the officiant of the marriage ceremony is also stated in normal cases.

Free marriage records have many widespread uses. They are an invaluable source of information for those in Genealogy and other forms of historical studies involving people. Lawyers, journalists and police use them to gather information. Separated children can search and locate their biological parents with free marriage records. Those in a romantic relationship often check their partner’s marital background by retrieving their marriage records especially when wedding bells are round the corner.

With computerization, it’s easy to obtain free marriage records nowadays from public offices that are placed in charge. Most of them will accept requests by mail, telephone, fax or in person. More and more are offering the online option also. There may be queue or waiting time involved as is common with public services and a good way to beat that is by turning to commercial information brokers. Even if they are not free, fees are usually very reasonable. With the keen competition, quality and value-for-money are generally very good.
