The Single Parenting Challenge – Developing Effective Single Parenting Skills.
All single parents are painfully aware that it can be difficult handling all of the responsibilities that are normally accomplished in a two parent household.
Single parenting requires you to become very effective at managing stress, finding helpful resources, organizing time and money as well as taking care of your health and overall well-being for the sake of your children.
Your child, or children, can definitely thrive in a single parent home, but it helps to develop certain skills which will enable you, as a single parent, to run your home smoothly and successfully.
Developing The Skills Of Single Parenting.
(or, How to Counteract the Effects of Single Parenting On Children.)
One of the most important skills you need to develop is being able to make and maintain a family budget. In order to support the home with the finances that are available, you must keep accurate financial records, learn budgeting skills, reduce some of the “extras” or “unnecessaries” and even learn to work creatively with the money you have at your disposal.
This can be very demanding, especially if your ex spouse was the major wage earner. You may have to deal with a drastic reduction in cash flow until alimony, child support payments or some sort of financial agreement or assistance is arranged following the divorce. And, for most men who have custody of the children, this is most likely not an option they can fall back on.
Another essential skill is organization. It helps to keep a family calendar and to encourage your older children to list their important events on it. This can include things like homework due dates, school events, sporting events, and so on.
Next, work to keep previous traditions and customs, or develop new ones, that center around holidays, birthdays and other special times and occasions. This helps to minimize the number of adjustments a child needs to make. It also provides your kids with some sense of security and continuity.
Promoting teamwork is another very important skill, where you involve your children in things such as home maintenance chores. This is done by assigning age-appropriate jobs to each member of the family. Children learn how to work together and can develop feelings of pride in ownership and a sense of responsibility.
Having a positive outlook is absolutely necessary when it comes to establishing an effective single parent household. Parents who regard the single parent home as a positive option that will be successful, help their children adjust to the new family situation that much quicker and better.
You can also further develop your single parenting skills by implementing or re-establishing appropriate behavioral boundaries. Your children can be given opportunities to help you make decisions about the home, family activities and even the house rules and the consequences if these rules are broken. This helps to teach them how to solve problems and how to plan for the future.
(Obviously, any disciplining still remains the job of the parent…didn’t think you’d get out of it that easily, did you?
)
Finally, work on developing your self-confidence. A well-informed, self-assured parent can make good, sound decisions and you should believe in your ability to create a happy and functional home environment to minimize the effects of single parenting on children.
Even though your child may be used to a two parent household, your son or daughter can thrive and be successful when making the change and adjustment to a one parent household.
No matter what the living situation is, now that you are a single parent, you should always make it your ultimate goal to be reliable and responsive to your child’s needs. Developing and strengthening your single parenting skills is now, more than ever, something you must put your mind to…your children are counting on you.
